Internet costs 1.3 billion in 24 hours

According to recent research by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), internet shutdowns in Pakistan have substantial adverse effects on the economy.

PIDE states that if the Internet is shut down for 24 hours, Pakistan experiences an immediate loss of PKR 1.3 billion, equivalent to 0.57 percent of the daily GDP average.

The economic consequences of stopping the Internet can be disastrous, particularly for ride-sharing services, food delivery, freelance work, and telecommunications industries.

Dr. Nadeem ul Haque, Vice Chancellor of PIDE, stated that the Internet is necessary for modern life.

Nevertheless, Pakistan’s internet infrastructure has yet to meet the high quality and coverage levels. The research reveals, for example, that internet shutdowns adversely affect industries such as transport, food delivery, and freelance work.
